Amd officially screwed up am5, the board prices are simply insane. My friend was building an am5 system and a midrange b650 board was $100 more than my old asus x570 board... wtf. He went with a z690/13600kf/ddr4 combo instead.

From $100 more, you get AND support till 2025, mean any new AMD CPUs will work with the 2022 with the 1708 socket!

What makes you think people update cpus every few years?

The socket will stay around until 2025 but that doesn't mean that motherboards made in 2022 will support later processors. Look at X370 owners getting stiffed with no support for Ryzen 5000 series CPUs despite having the same socket.

LGA1700 may be a dead end platform, but I put zero faith in AMD providing support for future AM5 CPUs on X670/B650.

That CPU limit on older AM4 mobos was not entirely AMD's fault. The EEPROM chips that mobo manufacturers used just didn't have the byte capacity to store the entire AM4 lineup, and the fancy BIOS GUIs.
And it's not like there wasn't a larger capacity EEPROM chip that could be used. It's just that it would have costed more.

X370 works with Ryzen 5000 series. I have an X370 Taichi I bought in 2017, I first went with a Ryzen 1700. Then over the years I upgraded to 2700X, 3900X, and most recently 5950X. No motherboard I ever owned allowed me to upgrade a CPU four times.

The AMD motherboard prices are a bit higher than the Intel ones - however the AMD motherboards can be used for multiple generations of CPUs whereas a new Intel motherboard is needed for each new generation of CPUs. (AM4 motherboards covered CPUs from 2 core Athlon chips to the Ryzen 5950X and AMD has promised that the AM5 socket will last for at least 5 years.) This effectively reduces the price as when a new more powerful AMD chip is released it can be used with nothing more than a BIOS update and some fresh thermal grease.

You're confusing sockets with BIOS support. The socket may be the same for many years but older motherboards may not get updated BIOSes with support for newer CPUs despite having the same socket. Look at X370 for an example. Most motherboards have no support for Ryzen 5000 series CPUs despite using AM4, and the few that do are mostly through beta BIOSes and community supported hacks.

um, i think part of the reason why X370 users couldnt upgrade to ryzen 5000 was because of 2 things, the bios chip wasnt big enough to hold all the cpu IDs, and such, as well as possibly the power the board provided. either way, it is STILL better then what intel has pretty much offered, well, ever. intel, every 2 years they change the socket, so in that cause you NEEDED to get a new board, at least with AMD, you have a chance to get some thing now, and change just the cpu in 3+ years, cant say the same for intel.

Not always true. Intel 12th and 13th gen processors can fit the same mainboard.
Intel 6th and 7th could as well.

Some Socket 1200 mainboards designed around the 10th generation Intel CPUs could also fit the 11th These were primarily Z490 chipset boards (value chipsets generally could not). So it isn't always as clear as that.

Most of the reviews are on AM4 socket motherboards. The AM5 is for ATX and EATX! No mATXSize!😟

    Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE
    MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI
    Asus TUF GAMING B650M-PLUS WIFI
    MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI

IMO, it's a bit of a toss up as to which is the better mATX AM5 mobo, but the choices are pretty good this time around.
